1. Walk at your own pace. I walk fast, there are others that walk a lot faster than me and a lot slower than me. That's okay - it's not a race, but you are out there to get some exercise and prepare for a long distance walk, so it's not a Sunday stroll either.
2. Bring your cell phone. If you run into any problems and you don't see one of us, call me.
3. If anything does not feel "right" - stop walking and tell someone. We want everyone to stay healthy
4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!!!
As we train, make sure you have:
* a fanny pack or whatever you want to carry your beverages, socks, body glide, id, cell phone and whatever else you want
* water bottle or two (one with sports drink, one with water)
* identification
* hat or visor
* sunglasses
* money for breakfast - but we can stop back by the car before heading to breakfast
* extra socks on long walks
* sunscreen – apply before you start walking and then again on breaks
* lip balm
* rain poncho or umbrella - if the forecast calls for rain
* emergency contact number - save it in your cell phone as "ICE" or "In Case of Emergency"
Once you start walking over 10 miles, the support team will be crewing for you.
The support team will have sunscreen, snacks, extra water and gatorade, ice, mole skin, foot powder, bio freeze, cold towels and plenty of smiling faces Sheila’s Shake and Bake Blister Prevention Recipe – worked for Sheila P and Denise Wa 1. Smear Body Glide all over your feet paying particular attention to the toes and in between. 2. Holding a plastic grocery bag over your foot pour foot powder all over it. We’ve been using Gold Bond. 3. Hold the bag around your ankle tight and shake all the powder in the bag over your foot. 4. Pour additional powder into your socks and tennis shoes (optional) 5. Put your socks on over all of the Body Glide and powder. 6. At lunch repeat the whole process and put on clean socks. Yes, you will need at least two pairs of socks each day.
